Okay, one quibble.
I'm not going to blame Conrad, as he didn't know, and I've certainly used the phrase -- frequently -- and it is a very cool phrase, sure ... but "the law so nice, we passed it twice," was coined by Tim Grant, not by me.

Here's a picture of Tim at the April 2004 MCPPA rally that I ran for CCRN.  He was one of our six proctors, and ran the radios:

The woman at the right of the picture is Senator Pat Pariseau, the author of MCPPA2; the woman on the left is my wife, Felicia.  No, that isn't Uma Thurman standing next to Pat -- it's one of her staffers.

We had a great turnout.

It was a good day.

Hmm... I think I want to do another MCPPA birthday party next year.  Anybody in?

Yes. Not just yes, but heck, yes.

We have a lot to celebrate, and a lot left to do.

I think it would be a good idea. I was kinda bummed out that I didn't get to go shooting with you guys after the Capitol steps festivities last time. Plus, Joel's shirt made my Tommy Bahama flowered shirt look positively subdued.

Forgive me for hijacking but a question if I may

And just so it's not an egregious hijacking yes count me in too :-)

OK now does anyone have any inside information or even informed opinion on how many applications in Ramsey Cty get personal followup?

I put in my paperwork 6/1/05 - first day they said they wanted permit applications.

Nary a peep (as expected - I know Sherriff Fletcher is no fan of the MCPPA and holds onto applications as long as he can) until today - when a couple of deputies dropped by and chatted with a couple of neighbors and (somewhat surprisingly) the wife.

This to me implies they are seeking an excuse to deny and think they can make a case if they ask around and dig up some dirt. I do have one non-violent non-related misdemeanor some three years ago. While the deputies were by all accounts pleasant some of the questions they asked seemed a bit leading - does he have a temper and so on (again I have no record that would imply I do). They even asked how long I'd been in the country (I'm an immigrant US Citizen) which to me is completely irrelevant. Before anyone asks the obvious no I am not Iraqi by birth - and I don't think British-sponsored terrorism is seen as a major risk yet.

I doubt (unless they want to make their accounting more realistic) they are subjecting all applications to this scrutiny, so can anyone give me any ideas how many might and what else, other than a mnore serious attempt at declining, it might mean? On the positive side basically they have till Friday to either send me a denial or a permit so they have not left themselves a whole lot of time to keep digging, but I can't help being a tad concerned. There are no deep dark skeletons I am afraid of - I just think they might want to try any excuse no matter how flimsy to deny.

Nobody knows. My own take is that Fletcher encourages his deputies to both:

a: investigate in detail when they've got a reason, and
b: do some random overly thorough investigations without a reason to justify the padding that he manifestly does.

I wouldn't worry about it.
