The Strib weighs in...
... on the restoration of the MCPPA.

And, for once, I don't have any complaints about the article.  Sheriff Dave Menden of Scott County puts it well:  "I can tell you that 98 percent of the people that come in are just good citizens."

I'm not surprised.  I've said before that Conrad deFiebre is both a good reporter and the best that the Strib's got.

My two cents

In an otherwise very well-written article, I was bothered by his use of the phrase "handgun permits" rather than "carry permits". When reporting statistics, as he was, being precise and accurate is important. Vague language starts to blur the issue and muddy the context.

A good point, and one that I suggest you politely suggest both to Conrad, and to the Strib's reader's representative. You're right in that the terms suggests -- it doesn't quite say -- that these are permits to own handguns, rather than to carry them. Given the frequent confusion in the Strib over that issue -- see Kim Ode's column -- referring to them as "handgun carry permits" would probably make more sense.

Ditto. For better or worse, it muddies the waters between places like MN and IL, where you actually need to have a permit just to own a gun or buy ammunition for it.
