Where to look for basic info

Okay, since Joel's put it that way...

Here's an open question: what's a good source of basic firearm info for someone who doesn't speak the firearm language? Is there a good book or website or listserve for finding out what terms more sophisticated than "revolver" mean, getting recommendations, finding out some basics about firing ranges, shooting competitions, etc?

I'd start with http://www.recguns.com/Sources/topOutline.html .

How long is Hennepin taking to process applications?

They told me "30 days" at the window, but it's kind of like measuring dog years; is that 30 days as the crow flies, or 30 business, er, "government operation" days?

The latter puts it out six weeks and change for me, since I applied June 3rd and there's a holiday involved.

The other thing I wonder is if the "government shutdown" will affect this. I can't imagine the database systems used to actually perform the background check would be shutdown during this time period, but that doesn't mean that it wouldn't be used as a pretense to delay permits.

I'm kind of hoping that it's 30 days as the crow flies at a maximum and is actually less, as in sometime next week. I'm kind of surprised that it even takes 30 days; what exactly do they "check" during a background check? Will those overdue library books I once had come into play?

It took 26 days to get my permit, as the crow flies. I have a buddy who's 30-day window expired yesterday in Dakota county. He called and they claimed to be short-staffed. They said they mailed his permit yesterday, so they took exactly 30 days to get it in the mail.

Nasty Thought

Since the current law says that posting notice or oral notice suffices to outlaw possession of a firearm in a location, and doesn't (as far as I know) make exceptions for "authorized" people, could some rude person call the police to complain about an armed bank guard in a posted bank, and get the police to cite him for violating the posting?

I'm a bit confused about the requirement to show your permit to a law-enforcement officer "if asked." Does this mean that if the cop asks for your driver's license you are supposed to show him your permit, because technically he's asking for something?

There is a specific exemption in that part of the law for LEOs, and on-duty armed guards.

(g) This subdivision does not apply to an on-duty peace
29.6 officer or security guard acting in the course and scope of
29.7 employment.

But it's a nice thought.

Open?

Well, if it's truly Open:

So, Rose holds the entire Time Vortex in herself for like 2 minutes; long enough to destroy an entire Dalek invasion fleet, reverse the affects of saturation mass driver bombardment of Earth via that fleet, resurrect billions of people including her boyfriend Sparky the Trisexual Con-man with a Heart of Gold, and conduct Jedi Mind Tricks on people ranging from 1879 to 5.5/apple/26 (5.5 billion AD or so), and all she gets is a hangover. The Doctor holds the same Time Vortex in himself for like 5 seconds and he freakin' DIES.

Is it just me, or did Rose make the Time Vortex her bitch, and The Doctor got totally owned?

I think Rose popped a Prilesec before swallowing the time vortex. This shut down the acid pumps in her stomach. I believe the reaction between the time vortex and the stomach acid is what caused Doc to cack. I could be wrong, so don't try this at home.

Amazon has 37 copies of the first book available by used sellers for as low as $3.45

Search under "David Gerrold"

They have all or most of the other books in the series too.

Amazon is usually the first place to look.
