Update on the KARE11 "investigation"
Unfortunately, there's not much to update.  The responses from KARE11 that I've seen have been brief, lacking in detail, and not helpful.  One of the anchors pled ignorance -- he was off that night -- but if he's decided to follow up, I haven't heard about it.  If the producer, Lonnie Hartley -- I'm guessing she's at lhartley@kare.gannet.com -- has had anything to say, she hasn't said it to me.  Haven't heard from Scott Goldberg, either, although he read my email to him early this morning.

It's hard to tell, for sure, if it was merely a matter of lazy reporting, or if there was some agenda being pushed, and while I've got my guess -- both -- the relative silence could be argued either way.

What to do?  If you haven't called or emailed them, and asked about the story, please do.  More details here. We can certainly give up on crying foul when the media misreports issues of importance to us, but I don't think any of us would like the longterm result, so I'm not going to.

The response I got from Kare 11

This is the response I got from Scott Goldberg at Kare 11, which I thought was pretty laughable...

Jason,

Thanks for watching Sunday night's Extra, and thanks for taking the time to write.

While I appreciate your thoughts, I strongly disagree with your assertions in this email. Our report was written fairly, researched thoroughly and reviewed by station managers before it aired.

If you truly believe "there was no attempt to show both sides of the story," I would encourage you to take another look at what we reported. Our story featured interviews with Sen. Pat Pariseau, who sponsored the gun bill in the senate; John Caile, a lobbyist and firearms trainer who helped write the law; a woman applying for a weapons permit; and two sheriffs who certainly would not call themselves "well known, vocal critics" of the law, as you suggested.

Incidents like the one mentioned in the link you sent in your email are indeed interesting -- and newsworthy. I would encourage any permit holder who has legally and justifiably used his firearm to contact us, as we certainly would be interested in telling his or her story.

Again, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us.

Sincerely,
Scott Goldberg
