He did it, so I don't have to.
At least arguably, I should have quaffed some dramamine and fisked this -- but Matt Payne did it, and did it better than I would have.

And he avoided the cheap shot -- err, so to speak -- that I would have taken.

Given the astounding number of sexual abuse cases being brought against Catholic clergy, I imagine one motivation for a priest to oppose the Second Amendment might be fear of some former alter boy going mad from all the brutal sodomy and engaging in some revenge shooting. It sounds like this fellow may be trying to prevent the perverts among his brethren from paying for their crimes in a vigilante manner.

But someone should assure the Father that denying carry permits won't make perverted priests any safer, since the victims of these sexual predators often lead such tragic lives that their records aren't clean enough to allow them to receive permits. He might better direct his efforts at ridding his ranks of pedophiles.

My first job out of college was working in a publishing house owned by one of the major Christian religions, so I got quite a lot of first-hand experience with the business end of organized religion, and you'd better believe that the sex-abuse scandal that is rocking the Catholic Church has been bad for business. Think Enron, the Firestone-Ford Explorer debacle, and the post-9.11 airline crisis combined. There's nothing the bean counters running the Catholic Church would like better than to distract the people in the pews (we used to call them "P.I.P.s") from the epidemic of pedophile priests and Church's disgraceful response.

I hope Catholic gun owners show the church that it picked the wrong enemy when it chose to start attacking Second Amendment supporters. Many people who don't approve of the public school system home school their kids. Maybe it's time for Catholics who don't approve of the Church's politics to start home churching their families.

Here's an example from yesterday's news of the cost associated with pedophile priests in just one diocese:

Look at the dollar figures involved. It's no wonder the Catholic Church is trying to use gun owners as boogy men to distract the public away from the monsters within its own ranks.
